Don't buy this expecting a good French translation

*by H***F on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 May 2019*

I bought this version because I've been looking for a French translation of Les Mis for a long time. I'd already bought a version on amazon that only turned out to be part one (and happily got a refund), and was stupidly optimistic this would be the perfect version - oh how I was wrong.First of all, there are no page numbers and no publisher information, except that it was printed in Poland by Amazon Fulfilment. The text changes font size halfway through, the titles are inconsistent in size, and some words even seem to be missing translation, notably the very un-French words 'burning hearts'.Obviously that's not anything to completely condemn the book by, but the fact that it cuts out vast swathes of text is. Now, I don't claim to be a Les Mis expert, and I've only given this version a cursory look over since I got it today, but I've read the English version enough times to know that Enjolras, Combeferre, Courfeyrac, in fact all of Les Amis' descriptions are much, much longer than the ones given in this version. In fact in this version it's cut down to only a page long. And I would bet that this is the case for the other parts of the book too.The book isn't short (no page number on how long exactly it is), but it's visibly shorter than the English version I have that has much smaller font, and honestly it reads like sparknotes. The translation, as I mentioned earlier, is not good, though I don't know if this is because they've cut things out or because it's just genuinely wrong. But (sticking with the Les Amis section) one of the most iconic descriptions of Joly as 'malade imaginaire' (hypochondriac) often kept untranslated in the English versions has been... translated? In this version it reads 'jeune imaginaire' - young imaginary - which is a completely different meaning. And, while again I don't claim to be an expert in French, there are nonsensical translations; in the English version there is this quote 'He was severe in his enjoyments. He chastely dropped his eyes before everything which was not the Republic.' which they have tried to replicate with 'Elle est severe dans leurs joies et leurs yeux chastement abaissement avant tout n'etait pas la replublique' and off the bat you can see they've used the wrong pronoun, and confuse it further with using 'their' instead of 'his'.This is the second translation I've bought from Amazon, and again it's rife with problems. And for £23 I certainly expected much more. So if you are looking to find a decent translation, don't bother buying it here, try to find it on a reputable bookseller who doesn't run text through google translate and sell as a 'translation' to turn a quick profit.

    Fleshing out the story

*by C***S on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 February 2019*

I've been a devotee of Les Mis the musical for many years and I also appreciated the 2012 film. This January's BBC drama was so good in giving a much fuller background to the characters and story. Encouraged by this I bought a kindle version of the novel. It contains even more detail - for example, The Bishop's story is described in great detail and made him come to life more fully. I'm beginning to develop more understanding and empathy for Javert. Some of the details can be tedious and I chose to skim. It's not going to be a quick read - I'm 14% through in 10 days but it is a very good read. There are passages that are painful to read but I find the whole story uplifting.

    Poor

The book featured here - cover shown - is not the original French novel but some curious abridged version written in terrible French with grammatical mistakes all over the place. Almost reads like a translation from English back to French. I even came across the phrase ‘site internet’ in one paragraph. If you’re going to sell a French version of this novel, you could at least let the buyer know that it’s not the original but some crap approximation.
