If you ate large spoonfuls of raw carrageenan powsder, it would expand in your stomach and cause issues, just like if you swallowed spoonfuls of yeast powder, it would also expand in your stomach and cause issues, but that does not make yeast "bad/toxic/unhealthy"....just a misuse of the ingredient. There is also another non-food ingredient known as degraded carrageenan, that has industrial applications (used in x-ray equipment), where they take the same natural seaweed, but use acids and other harsh chemicals in the processing to make degraded carrageenan.
