The voltage of the solar panel varies between 20 volts down to zero depending on the sunlight and I wasn't sure the that the small pump would take more than 12 volts so I connected this in between the solar panel and the pump. Worked perfectly. In bright sunlight the panel puts out 20 volts and the unit drops the voltage down to 12 volts for the pump. Problem solved! Specs say it will take in up to 36 volts and output 12 volts at a maximum of 5.6 amps. The solar panel puts out about 20 volts at a maximum of 2 amps, this unit drops the voltage down to 12 volts.
