Mate Factor Organic Yerba Mate, Original Fresh Green, 12 Ounce

Review: Excellent organic quality - This is such high quality green mate, (you can find out why on their website), it converted me from chimarrao which I thought could never happen. One thing to note is that mate is not like black or green tea in that it doesn't get bitter or stewed the longer it's in the water. The opposite in fact. Bitterness is more a function of the initial water temperature, I like 160F but you could go even lower. If you're interested in a deeper or richer flavor without going to a gourd, you can try a few things besides using more mate. Easiest is to add a small amount of cold water to the leaves first to open them up. You can also grind the leaves a little finer (gently, by hand is better for avoiding powder than by machine) to get both deeper flavor and more body. Finally, most effective is put the leaves in cold water in a glass jar ahead of the brew time, put this in the fridge if it's the night before, then heat this gently in a waterbath to temperature in the morning. This, along with prior grinding, gives a cup with a more intense and longer taste, and at 160F, 1-2T per 6 ounces of water, a great lingering sweetness to the finish.

**Q: is this mate unsmoked?**
A: It's advertised as unsmoked. However, keep in mind that this does not mean that no PAH are present. Even unsmoked mate tea has been shown to contain highly carcinogenic substances. Most mate teas have also been shown to contain high levels of Anthraquinone that has been shown to be carcinogenic in animal studies and is most likely carcinogenic for humans. None of it should be consumed if present.

**Q: Is it really $9.70 for one 12oz(340g) bag and $45.99 for two 12oz(340g) bags? that seems odd? is it a different product? am i reading it wrong?**
A: That is very odd. I usually buy two bags at $9.70. I had never seen those other prices.

**Q: What color is this mate?**
A: green/brown like all mate I have ever seen.

**Q: Why is the product super hard like a brick? Is that normal? How to remedy? Otherwise will return**
A: I open and pour into a quart jar.  Then the brick should become soft.    If it doesn’t then I would return it.  But you have to open the package.
