In the French version, the travelers are cast as soldiers and the townspeople are fearful of being generous because of the ravages of war. In Sweden, the story features a tramp who teaches a stingy old woman generosity by using a nail to start a sumptuous nail broth. In the Russian version, an axe serves as the soup starter. Everywhere the tale is told, the plot ends with the optimistic realization that when each person makes a small contribution, the collective impact can be huge. In Heather Forest’s contemporary version, two travelers make there way to an unidentified mountaintop village. Searching for food, the travelers knock on the villagers’ doors, only to be spurned with suspicious looks. The travelers decide to gather everyone with their magic soup. In this version, the soup starter is a stone. Eventually, the travelers convince the villagers to contribute to the soup. One child offers a carrot, one man suggests a potato, and eventually the entire crowd offers up their own ingredients. Thus, the magic of stone soup (or nail soup, or ax soup) is that it brings people together and encourages generosity. This book also includes a recipe with ingredients and instructions that young readers can participate in to make their very own version of stone soup. The instructions begin, Set a time and place when friends can gather to cook together. Each friend brings some vegetable to contribute to the soup. While the soup is cooking, sing songs and tell stories. When the soup is down, break the bread so that everyone has a piece. The recipe is easy and can be made at home or in the classroom. Heather Forest often sings her stories before putting them on paper. That technique is evident in Stone Soup with catchy rhyme schemes and melodic dialogue. In addition, Susan Gaber’s illustrations add flavor and color to this musical story. It is the story of people working together and how a wonderful soup is made with a "magic stone", due to the fact that all the people in the town contribute just one vegetable each to improve the flavor. I got to know this story because a teacher at my children's elementary school entered a contest put on by Paul Newman's food company for best recipe using one of his products - won $10,000 for items for the school!! RECIPE: Boil a small stone in 2 cups of water for 5 minutes to kill the germs. In an 8 quart soup pot, put the stone, 2 lbs. beef stew meat, 10-11 cups water, 1 large chopped onion, 4 tsp. salt and 1 tsp. pepper, simmer on low for two hours. Add 26 oz. jar Newman's Own "Sockarooni" Spaghetti Sauce, 4 sliced carrots, 3 sliced celery stocks, 10 small red potatoes cut in chunks, 1 small pkg frozen Italian green beans, and 1/2 cup uncooked ABC pasta. Simmer until done. Serve with warm bread and butter.
