Can the software be purchased outside of the maching?** A: The software comes free with the machine. You can download the software here and try it out to see if it would meet your needs: https://www.silhouetteamerica.com/software#silhouette-3D The software allows you to import STL and OBJ formats, so you could use a more robust design software if preferred and then save files to use in Silhouette 3D. Version 1.1 of Silhouette 3D has added some basic operations for combining two shapes via UNION, DIFF, INTERSECT, etc., so there are some interesting things that can be done by creating two shapes and then sculpting via intersecting areas. **Q: Does it have auto leveling and a heated build platform? can you print from an sd card or does it have to be hooked by usb to computer?** A: You have to have a computer. It doen`t have a heated bed. Uses any of the right size PLA filament. It will only print from the Silhouette 3D software. I can not tell you how well it works mine arrived damaged and although Sillouette has been great working with me, it has been over a month. Hopefully when I get home next week the part will be there that I need to fix it. Self leveling? Sorry, I don't know the answer to that one. **Q: they are selling replacement print head including the heating element already on Silhouette site. Do they have issues with these?** A: I bought a replacement head when they were on sale and am so glad they did. After a few months of use, my printer head got totally clogged with filament. I cannot get it to come out at all. I simply swapped in my spare head, and only lost the hour or two it took to get it done. **Q: Has anyone not been able to load the software because of a video driver** A: I haven't had this, but make sure your drivers are up to date. I was able to start using it straight out of the box. The software is pretty intuitive for me, since I already use the Silhouette Studio (for the Cameo cutter) software. The software has its limitations, but that is what makes it easy to use. The software will, however, import files created by other 3D software, so if you have those skills, the world is truly your oyster with this machine. I had the opportunity to use support via email and via the online chat. Both were excellent experiences. I have enjoyed excellent support for my Silhouette Cameo for the last six or seven years that I've owned their machines, and I was pleased to see that that experience will continue with the Alta. For the very low price, this machine has great function and quality. Definitely would recommend it to anyone interested in 3D printing at this level. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Starter 3D Printer *by T***N on October 3, 2018* I was surprised by how much I liked the Silhouette Alta. I am new to 3D printing, so I wasn't sure what I'd be able to make with it, but after gaining inspiration from several Facebook groups, I was able to create toys for my girls, pendants, keychains, and more.While this wouldn't be the ideal printer if you are looking for a higher-end machine with a heated bed, fan, and other advanced features, it is a great starter machine for someone interested in trying out 3D printing.I loved that Silhouette 3D ties into my existing Silhouette library of 2D designs, which can then be extruded to form cookie cutters, jewelry boxes, and other 3D designs. Silhouette also has a growing library of designs in their store, so it was nice to be able to apply my subscription credit to 3D content. ### ⭐ NO, NO, Don't do it! *by A***C on July 30, 2018* This machine is a piece of junk. I own every other Silhouette machine and baring a few minor issues they are great. The ALTA arrived, and it has never worked. For about 6 weeks, I have been in the silhouette chat and on the phone with them. The last thing they did was to send me a new print head. Nor I have a $300.00 Alta with parts all over the place. Swing Design's refund police is a full refund on any box that has not been opened. other wise they start deducting $$ . There is no was for me to return it. Silhouette said I have to replace the print head so they can tell if it is defective or not. I am VERY DISSAPOINTED with this machine. I would advise anyone interested, to waite until it has been out for a year or more so they can work out the bugs. Not worth the money and NOT through Sing Design.
