Review: Quality brand-name product - My old MOEN shower valve started to become very difficult to turn off. We have hard water, so I suspect calcium buildup. I suspect that if I didn't replace it, it would either begin to leak or stop working altogether. I was concerned about ordering a replacement because I read all the reviews of people buying aftermarket replacements that didn't fit or started leaking soon after installation. So I was looking for a brand name replacement. This one was a little more expensive than the no-name aftermarket parts, but worth it. Removal of the old one was quite difficult. It seemed stuck in place. You have to spin the old valve 45 degrees to remove it. I was glad ai also purchased the removal tool. I had to use channel lock pliers to twist it back and forth when removing to get it to come out of the valve body. When I took the old one out, the rubber crumbled. It appears it had hardened from years of use and I think it was difficult to remove because the rubber gasket was stuck inside the channels inside the valve body. Once I was able to get the old one out, I cleaned up the inside of the valve body using an acidic shower cleaner to remove any calcium and lime build up. Installing the new one was fairly easy. I used the included silicon lubricant packet and applied it to the new valve and also around the interior of the valve body. Installing the new one required a bit of light tapping with a hammer (do not tap on the brass stem - there is a plastic piece included that fits over the brass stem and rests against the plastic body of the valve - I was able to make a wood tap block by drilling out a hole for the brass stem). I lightly tapped on the valve body to set it and reinstalled the retaining clip. The only issue I had was that the instructions were unclear as to the position of the brass stem. The first time I installed it, it was upside down (reversed 180 degrees), which means the shower was running when I turned the water back on. It was a simple thing to spin it 180 degrees to make it operate properly. I'm very happy with the quality of the replacement and it works 100% as designed. Now my shower is easy to operate and is no longer difficult to turn off.
Review: Fit perfectly....... - It wasn't as easy to replace as I thought it would be. There was alot of twisting and pulling with the cartridge removal tool I bought for the job. Unfortunately in my case there was much corrosion to contend with. The old cartridge broke while being removed and there were pieces to be cleaned out with the use of a needle nose plier, but once the debris was removed the cartridge with a little pressure fit snuggly in place. My suggestion is to buy the replacement kit and make everything new. Do not try to mix old with new as it makes the installation difficult. The lever is now easier to move and works very well with the new cartridge.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does this valve come with the O rings etc or is it just the valve?**
A: I just replaced this cartridge last night. It is quite a simple process that is actually difficult to pull off. Some tips: 1) It came packaged with a plastic "nut" on the end of the brass shaft. it makes the shaft look very short. This is the nut that you can use to twist the old cartridge back and forth to remove it. It must come off when you insert the locking pin.2) If the cartridge has been in there any amount of time, chances are it is going to be very reluctant to come out. After struggling with removing the old one, and tearing off the plastic tabs in the process (before I identified the "nut"), then watching a bunch of how-to videos, I decided to see if heat applied to the valve body would help. I used a plumber's torch set very low, and it worked perfectly. Even a stick lighter might work. With the flame set low, and being very aware of the surrounding area, heat the valve body for a couple minutes. I does not need to be cherry red. While you heat, twist and pull the cartridge with a pair of pliers. After 1/2 an hour of zero progress, with the heat it popped out in about 2 minutes.3) Once the old one is out, stick your finger in the hole and feel for any remaining parts. Mine left behind a large piece of plastic that would have really messed up the re-install had I not stuck my finger in. I also wiped out the inside with a rag just to remove and metal shavings and dirt that might damage the new cartridge.4) This is important. The valve needs to be installed in the proper orientation for cold water to come before hot. Put it in upside down and the hot water comes first. On the face of the replacement, on the plastic tab, there should be a H|C imprint. This must be toward the top. If you don't see it, then look at the black plastic valves on the side of the cartridge. Each will have a hole in it. One will be more forward and one further toward the back. The one to the back is the HOT side and should be on the left.5) Once you have the proper orientation figured out, lube the O-rings with the included packet. Do NOT use petroleum (Vaseline) jelly unless you want to replace this again in a few years.6a) Gently push the new part into place with the H|C tab on top and re-insert the lock pin. Turn the water on and check for leaks.6b) The valve shaft will rotate without limit so don't panic if the water comes on and off while you turn the shaft. Find the orientation that shuts off all water with the handle at 6 o'clock.7) Reassembly of the plastic "gears" is also important. This took a few trial and error runs to figure out. These are the temperature limiters where you set the max temp. If you line up both tabs, then you get max hot at 9 o'clock. Move the outer ring CLOCKWISE and it will stop the rotation before you reach max (good for scald protection w/ kids). My suggestion is to put the metal backing ring/ handle on the shaft and turn it to off, straight down, to be sure the shaft is positioned correctly otherwise you might end up with off at the top 12 o'clock position - the handle will only install one way. Once you have done this, remove the metal ring/handle and install the face plate and trim tube. Both should have a notch on top that lines up with the valve. Next, install the large plastic "gear" limiter on the shaft with the teeth facing out and the tab aligned to the trim tube. Now install the smaller plastic gear so it's tab perfectly aligns with and fits into the tab and slot. This set up will give you max hot water at the 9 o'clock position. You can move it clockwise to reduce the max temp. I suggest turning the water on and testing it for temp. When you test, you have to have the plastic limiters and the metal ring on with the metal tab on the back located somewhere between the outside limiter and inside limiter within the larger gap created by them. This is easiest to do by test assembling with the handle first. Before you put the screw in and install the handle you should have:Inserted the lock pinSet the shaft to the off position that allows the handle to point down (6 o'clock)Installed the large, then small temp limitersInstall the metal in the proper orientation, then installed the shaft screwInstall the handle properly on the shaft and tighten the allen lock screw.Another tip:If you want to maintain the exact temp settings you had originally, you can probably put a wrap of tape around the plastic limiters to hold their relative position.Take pictures as you removeTest fit and try out at every step
